Public Garden Boston
Established in 1837, the Boston Public Garden is the oldest
Boston Gardens, Swan Boats
botanical garden in America. The Public Garden has the finest formal plantings in central Boston. The beds along the main walkways are replanted throughout the year, to ensure a constant display of color and beauty. Plants are specific chosen not only for their botanical diversity, but for their ornamental qualities. Many believe that the Garden is at its best during the Spring when the tulips bloom during the first two weeks of May. Additionally, there are specimens of trees from both North America and Europe.
The Garden is located on the edge of the Boston Common. This area was once a large salt marsh. The only evidence that remains is the 3-acre pond, which is the central feature of the park. Since 1877 pedal Swan Boats have gracefully delighted the young and old alike. The boats provide excellent views of the natural beauty and wildlife of the Garden, set against the backdrop of downtown Boston. Admission to the Garden is free, but there is a small charge to hire the boats.
