Mansions of Newport
The Astor Mansion
The Astor Mansion known as Beechwood was built in 1851. In 1881 the house was purchased by William Backhouse Astor Jr, the grandson son of John Jacob Astor an immigrant who became America's wealthiest man by his fur and real estate business. In fact he was still on the list for the richest American's ever in 1999 ahead of Bill Gates, which should give you an idea of the Astor family's social status at the time.

Today the house has a number of events open to the public. You can join the popular Victorian Tour which take you right back in time where all around you will see live interpretations of Victorian life of which you can be an active participant. The Christmas season brings a new beauty to the house with elegant decorations, and participations in traditional festive waltzes and games. Or you can test your detective skills at a murder mystery night. For more information you can call 401 846 3772 or visit the Astor Beechwood Mansion website.

Belcourt Castle
Belcourt Castle was built for the Belmont family in the late 1800's. The house was owned the Belmonts until 1940 when it was sold to its current owners the Tinney Family. Inside the house is a museum that includes a wonderful collection of art collected by the Tinney Family from around the world, along with fine furniture, sculptures and medieval suits of armour. The house itself has interesting architecture with a strong Medieval and Renaissance influence.

Visitors to the house can choose from a number of tours including a candlelight tour, a ghost tour and a standard daily, guided tour. Through the year many special events are held at the house including a New Years Eve ball held in the house's Gothic ballroom.
