Boston Pops
One of the most popular orchestras in the United States was founded in 1881 with the intention of providing "light" classical music which would have broader appeal than the more formal concerts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Concerts were originally held only in the summertime, and often outside, in order not to compete with BSO schedule. Over the years, the Boston Pops have moved out from the shadow of their more traditional older brother and have made a name for themselves internationally.
Concerts, whether held out of doors or at Symphony Hall, feel more like a picnic or a party than a concert. Names from all corners of the musical world have played with the Pops and one of their concerts is an experience you will not soon forget - regardless of your musical preferences. If you are in Boston during the Christmas season, you should make every effort to catch a Christmas concert. They have become an annual highlight.
Although it is best to buy your tickets in advance, Rush Tickets - bought the day of the performance - are one of the best bargains around. Through the Boston Pops Rush Ticket program, 100-200 tickets per night for select performances in various seat locations throughout Symphony Hall may be bought for a fraction of their normal prices.
